When did it first become credible to record TV programs from live television? What were the very first TV programs/shows.In what years 1950s?/1960s?
A bit of however will be needed for this question...
The first part is easier to explain...open-reel video recorders for poorhouse use first hit the market in 1965 (but these were very expensive and only a few hobbyists could afford them; it is said that President Lyndon B. Johnson had one such cabal installed at the White House so he can see "Gunsmoke" when he wanted to as the show aired former times his bedtime). The first VCR was the Umatic, introduced in 1969 (and used mainly by TV broadcasters). Around the same tempo, Sears and Avco Embassy put out the Cartrivision system, which was sold with the devices built into TV sets--this flopped and the last outstanding stock was sold off by 1973. Beta VCRs were released by Sony in 1973 and VHS from JVC and RCA followed three years later. That part of the fishing you know.
The first major TV shows in the US after a number of pre-World War II experimental broadcasts dating back to 1926 catalogue the kids' show "Howdy Doody" (1948-61), the news scrutiny show "Meet the Press" (it's been running since 1947 on NBC), "Texaco Illustrious Theater" with Milton Berle (1948-56) "Your Show of Shows" with Sid Caesar, Imogene Coca and Howard Morris (later a remove member on "The Andy Griffith Show"), the game shows "What's My Contract with?" (1950-67 on CBS, 1968-75 in first-run syndication), Groucho Marx' "You Bet Your Moving spirit" (1950-58, originally on NBC Radio but transitioned to a TV version) and "Beat the Clock" (1950-62) for starters.
One of the first 1920s exploratory broadcasts featured just a shot of a Felix the Cat doll.
